Blizzard is keeping secrets about Diablo 4’s next season until BlizzCon, but you can still try some of it out next week

For the first time in three years, Blizzard has opted for a more enigmatic approach regarding the upcoming Diablo 4 season. Traditionally, the gaming giant provides detailed patch notes ahead of time, but this season, fans will have to wait until BlizzCon in September for the full reveal.

Season 15 Insights

Despite the shroud of mystery, the season 15 blog post offers a glimpse into what players can expect. New seasonal items, a selection of returning favorites from previous installments, and adjustments to the contentious Mythic Unique item system from last season are all on the agenda. However, two sections remain conspicuously blank, hinting at significant announcements to come during the BlizzCon event.

The first intriguing addition is the “Challenge Dungeons.” These dungeons appear to be boss encounters that players can stumble upon while exploring the expansive open world. Blizzard describes these encounters as opportunities to “fight against a fearsome boss,” with customizable difficulty levels available once players reach the endgame. This concept evokes thoughts of a more permanent version of the current season’s Deathtoll Chambers, where players can engage in mini-events following the defeat of a seasonal world boss. The potential for introducing tougher lair bosses could inject a fresh sense of unpredictability into the exploration experience.

Blizzard notes that the encounters in the Challenge Dungeons are designed to test the underlying game systems, suggesting that the final version of season 15 may feature different bosses or entirely new content. This could very well enhance an aspect of the game that some players find lacking in excitement.

The second newly hinted feature is the Overland Ambushes, which promise to catch players off guard in the open world. When a message alerts players that they are being hunted by a demon, they will have a mere 30 seconds to either escape or confront the foe. Described as a challenging encounter, the specifics surrounding the frequency and rewards of these ambushes remain vague, leaving players eager for more information as the public test realm (PTR) approaches next week.

Beyond these new features, the seasonal offerings appear promising. Players can look forward to “Soul Splinters,” new items to enhance their jewelry, each providing potent damage buffs at a cost, such as increased damage taken or temporary stuns. Additionally, Blizzard is revisiting the franchise’s history by reintroducing revamped versions of iconic Unique items from previous games, such as Leoric’s Crown from Diablo 3, which will now function as a jewelry item to amplify gem effects.

Moreover, the return of Diablo 3’s “Rebirth” system allows for character recycling each season, alongside adjustments to the Mythic Uniques that have sparked debate among players. The crafting and discovery of Mythics will be streamlined, with the rarest variants, known as Iconic Mythics, now featuring weaker, Unique versions to facilitate earlier integration into player builds. While skepticism remains regarding the evolution of Mythics into a new tier of items, there is a willingness to see how these changes unfold.

Players will have the opportunity to test many of these features during the Diablo 4 season 15 PTR, which is set to run from August 4 to August 11.
