Earlier this year, Epic Games acknowledged the shortcomings of its launcher and pledged to develop a more competitive alternative to Steam. At the recent Unreal Fest, the company revealed an ambitious roadmap for the upcoming year, introducing Epic Games Launcher V2, a platform that promises significant enhancements.
Transformative Upgrades on the Horizon
The new launcher is undergoing a complete internal overhaul aimed at boosting speed and expanding its feature set to match Valve’s offerings. Among the key improvements are:
- Reconstruction of the store from the ground up
- Introduction of in-store Patch Notes
- Implementation of player reviews
- A performance increase making the store 5 to 6.5 times faster
- Universal controller support
These enhancements will be rolled out alongside updates to Fortnite, ensuring a cohesive experience across Epic’s platforms.
Perhaps the most notable change is the introduction of a redesigned storefront tailored to individual users. This personalized approach will allow for game recommendations based on players’ tastes and playstyles. Additionally, game pages will evolve beyond merely displaying the price, title, and cover art, offering a more curated experience.
While the Epic Games Store has already made strides in modern aesthetics compared to Steam, it is the combination of improved speed and thoughtful curation that will ultimately define its success in the competitive landscape of digital game distribution.
