After an eight-year hiatus from the gaming industry, Cliff Bleszinski, the visionary behind the iconic Gears of War franchise, is contemplating a return to game development. His departure in 2018 followed the closure of Boss Key Productions, a studio that faced challenges after the lackluster performance of its titles, LawBreakers and Radical Heights. At that time, Bleszinski vowed to step away from game creation for good.
Rediscovering Passion
In a recent interview with 80 Level, Bleszinski shared insights into his life since leaving the industry, a period marked by personal growth and creative exploration. He authored an autobiography, produced a Tony Award-winning musical, and confronted a long-standing battle with alcoholism. This struggle culminated in a hospitalization earlier this year, prompting him to embrace sobriety and, in turn, rekindle his passion for gaming.
“At the end of the day, I want to create characters and worlds,” Bleszinski expressed during his conversation with journalist Brian Crecente. “I want to make stuff that people will cosplay and get tattooed on their bodies.” This renewed enthusiasm hints at a potential full-time return to the gaming world, as he mused about reestablishing his presence in the industry.
A Shift in Focus
While Bleszinski refrained from detailing specific projects he might pursue, he made it clear that he is not interested in developing PvP multiplayer games akin to those produced by Boss Key. “Good luck to anyone in that space,” he remarked, emphasizing his current preference for player-versus-environment (PvE) experiences. He reminisced about how Horde mode revitalized Gears of War 2, asserting that this genre remains timeless as players seek straightforward, enjoyable gameplay with friends.
Despite not disclosing any concrete ideas for a new game, Bleszinski hinted at a creative vision. “I can’t walk into a Home Depot without seeing a full arsenal at every turn,” he noted, suggesting that inspiration is abundant. “There’s so much more than just chainsaws.”
While the gaming community awaits further developments, the prospect of a new project under Bleszinski’s guidance is certainly enticing. Though LawBreakers struggled to find its audience, it showcased his knack for engaging multiplayer experiences. Meanwhile, Radical Heights, despite its untimely demise, held promise that remains in the minds of players. The potential for a spiritual successor to Gears of War looms large, especially in light of recent titles that have rekindled interest in that style of gameplay.
Ultimately, whether Bleszinski will fully re-enter the gaming arena remains uncertain. In 2020, he expressed a desire to create “a little game,” but that ambition has yet to materialize publicly. As he navigates this new chapter, the gaming world watches with bated breath, hoping for a return that could reignite the spark of creativity he once brought to the industry.
