Hasbro cancelled a D&D game from the Jedi: Fallen Order director

In a surprising turn of events, Hasbro has decided to discontinue a Dungeons & Dragons video game that was in the early stages of development at Giant Skull, the studio helmed by Stig Asmussen, known for his work on titles such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the God of War series. This partnership, which was announced just last summer, has now come to an abrupt halt, as reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.

Project Cancellation Details

Initially, the collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull was met with enthusiasm. John Hight, president of Wizards of the Coast, expressed confidence in the partnership, describing Giant Skull as “the perfect fit” for the ambitious project. Asmussen had promised an engaging experience, highlighting features like “immersive storytelling, heroic combat, and exhilarating traversal,” suggesting that the game would have followed an action-adventure format akin to his previous works.

Despite the setback with Giant Skull, there is still hope for fans of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. Another title, Warlock, remains in development. This third-person action-adventure game is being crafted by Invoke Studios, the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, and is slated for release in 2027.

Future Prospects for Dungeons & Dragons

While the cancellation of the Giant Skull project raises questions, it seems likely that Wizards of the Coast has additional plans in the pipeline. Speculation suggests that they may be working on a new D&D CRPG, aiming to capture some of the success seen with Baldur’s Gate 3. Even as Larian Studios shifts its focus back to its original setting for Divinity, the demand for D&D-themed games remains strong.

In addition to game development, Wizards of the Coast is actively exploring other avenues to leverage the popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3. Upcoming projects include an HBO series based on the franchise and a prequel novel centered around the character Astarion. Currently, however, the marketing spotlight is on Exodus, a Mass Effect-like RPG that is generating considerable interest.
