I have to admit, the mention of “strategy game” typically elicits a groan from me. As a dedicated player of League of Legends and Valorant, patience is not exactly my strong suit. So, when I discovered that my Gamescom 2025 schedule included titles like Europa Universalis 5 and Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, my initial reaction was one of dismay. However, what began as a disappointing prospect quickly transformed into one of the highlights of the event, with Olden Era securing a spot in my ‘top five games of Gamescom’ list. Perhaps I’m evolving; my reflexes are not as sharp as they once were, and my headshots are becoming less frequent. Since then, I’ve found myself reflecting on Ubisoft’s latest fantasy adventure, eagerly anticipating the chance to dive back in.
Ubisoft’s Potential Comeback
Months have passed since my preview of Olden Era, and I firmly believe this title could be the redemption Ubisoft desperately needs. The studio has faced its share of challenges, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows embroiled in controversy, Star Wars Outlaws failing to impress, and let’s not even mention Skull and Bones. In essence, Ubisoft is in dire need of a success.
Fortunately, it seems that Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, along with Anno 117—if Jamie’s preview is any indication—might provide the much-needed boost for the company. Olden Era not only boasts stunning visuals but also enhances the classic formula of the series by introducing the Lovecraftian Schism and an innovative Arena mode, reminiscent of Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Overall, it presents a vibrant reimagining of the beloved fantasy saga, and I am eager to invest more time in it.
Now, the excitement continues. Ubisoft recently announced during their 30th anniversary stream that a new demo for Olden Era is currently available on Steam. This demo features four playable factions: Dungeon, Necropolis, Schism, and Temple, alongside three game modes: Arena, Classic, and Single Hero. Players can engage in thrilling battles against Troglodytes to their heart’s content.
It is important to note, however, that the demo is single-player. While the full release will allow for multiplayer experiences with friends, for now, players will embark on their adventures solo. Additionally, the official early access launch has been pushed to 2026, rather than the originally planned 2025. I stand by my belief that if a delay results in a better game, then it is a worthwhile decision.
Ubisoft has confirmed that the early access launch for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is now set for 2026, but the demo is available for players to explore right now.
