Jack Black, Jason Momoa square off in ‘Minecraft’ movie

In a recent press event held in West Hollywood, California, actors Jack Black and Jason Momoa shared insights into their upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game ‘Minecraft,’ set to be released by Warner Bros on March 18, 2025. Black, who portrays the character Steve, expressed his deep connection to the game, stating, “I had kids that were obsessed with ‘Minecraft’ years before I heard about this movie.” His enthusiasm led him to immerse himself in the game, describing the experience as akin to learning a new language. “It’s not easy. You don’t get it that first day. You got to make the commitment to working on it for a few days, concentrated effort,” he explained. Once he grasped the game’s mechanics, he realized the creative potential it offers, noting, “Oh, I get it. You’re building things and it’s architecture.”

Momoa, who plays Garrett, chimed in with a light-hearted remark about their camaraderie, saying, “We’re homies.” Black humorously suggested that their bond was so strong they could be the next James Bond duo, to which Momoa playfully responded, “No.” The actors then shifted their focus back to the film, with Black emphasizing its authenticity to the ‘Minecraft’ universe. “This is ‘A Minecraft’ story. It doesn’t get every nook and cranny of the game, but it gets lots of lots of great, great things that the real gamers that love ‘Minecraft’ will be stoked about,” he said. He highlighted the inclusion of iconic elements such as creepers, zombies, and villagers, ensuring fans will find much to appreciate.

The Film’s Concept

The film, developed by Mojang Studios, takes viewers into the blocky realm of ‘Minecraft.’ Black’s character, Steve, has spent much of his life trapped in the alternate dimension known as Overworld. The plot thickens as four characters—Garrett (Momoa), Dawn (Danielle Brooks), and siblings Natalie (Emma Myers) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen)—discover Steve’s belongings in the real world. A magic cube then transports them through a portal to Overworld, where they must uncover its secrets to survive.

While Black was well-versed in the game prior to filming, Momoa admitted he had yet to experience it firsthand. Despite this, the duo found common ground during production, bonding over shared interests in rock music, comedy, and food, all while donning matching outfits for the press day.
