4J Studios, renowned for its pivotal role in adapting Mojang’s Minecraft for consoles and handheld devices, has expanded its horizons with the launch of a new studio in Edinburgh, UK. This strategic move marks a significant milestone for the Dundee-based company, which was established in 2005 by visionaries Chris van der Kuyl and Paddy Burns.
Embracing Local Talent
As reported by The Scotsman, 4J Studios is eager to tap into the rich talent pool within Edinburgh’s vibrant games sector. The studio is actively seeking to recruit skilled professionals as it advances its current project, Reforj. This ambitious endeavor is being developed in close collaboration with the community through the innovative Pioneer Program, which invites player feedback to shape the game’s evolution.
Currently, 4J employs around 50 dedicated staff members, and according to chief executive Paddy Burns, the momentum surrounding Reforj has been building steadily. “The development of Reforj has been gathering pace for several months now, and 20 years on from Chris and I launching the studio, this is as exhilarating a time as we can remember for the firm,” Burns shared.
He further emphasized the significance of the Pioneer Program, stating, “It’s fascinating to see how people are experiencing the game and to hear their feedback, allowing us to incorporate it as we go.” This interactive approach not only enhances the game but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration.
With the opening of the Edinburgh office, 4J Studios aims to harness the energy and creativity that the city offers. “We hope we can capitalize on that momentum and sense of energy by opening our first office in Edinburgh, which will give us even better access to the diverse pool of software and design talent that exists in and around the city,” Burns concluded, highlighting the studio’s commitment to growth and innovation in the gaming industry.
