Filmmaking duo Jared and Jerusha Hess, celebrated for their cult classics such as Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, are set to take on a new role as executive producers for Ari Selinger’s feature film debut, On The End. This project, which stars Tim Blake Nelson and Mireille Enos, caught the attention of the Hesses after its triumphant showing at the Rome International Film Festival, where it garnered accolades for Best Narrative Feature and Best Actress for Enos.
Film Synopsis and Background
On The End is inspired by a compelling David vs. Goliath narrative featured in The New York Times. The story centers around Tom, a mechanic from Montauk who finds himself in a precarious situation when he falls for Freckles, another outcast. As their relationship develops, Tom faces a daunting challenge when the town of East Hampton conspires to displace him from his beachfront home and auto repair shop.
The film is a collaboration between Wise Child Studios and Red Barn Films, currently in search of distribution, with Submarine Entertainment overseeing sales. The Hesses join an impressive lineup of executive producers, including Eric Kohn, Will Janowitz, and Tim Blake Nelson, who has previously collaborated with the Hesses on their Oscar-nominated short, Ninety Five Senses.
Behind the Scenes
Director Ari Selinger’s journey with Tom began while scouting locations for a short film. Tom generously offered his backyard filled with scrap metal as a set, leading to a friendship that blossomed during their hours of collaboration. Through this experience, Selinger became acutely aware of Tom’s struggles against the legal challenges posed by the town, witnessing firsthand the resilience and humor that characterized both Tom and Freckles.
The film boasts a talented cast, including James Badge Dale (The Departed), Lois Smith (Minority Report), Anna Chlumsky (Bride Hard), Desmin Borges, Matthew Maher, Glenn Fleshler, Michelle Hurd, and Sawyer Spielberg, adding depth to this poignant narrative.
Festival Circuit and Reception
On The End made its debut in the Industry Selects section at the Toronto International Film Festival before its official world premiere at this year’s Hamptons International Film Festival. It has since been showcased at the Woodstock Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival, receiving positive feedback from audiences and critics alike.
In a joint statement, Jared and Jerusha Hess expressed their admiration for Selinger’s work, stating, “Selinger’s film is as deeply human as you can get. Try not to laugh and cry your way through it—what independent cinema should be! Tim Blake Nelson and Mireille Enos compel you to believe in love.”
Selinger also shared his excitement about the collaboration, remarking, “There’s an electric feeling when storytellers who inspired you step into your world with a genuine, reciprocated appreciation for the work they helped shape. When I met Jerusha and Jared deep in the heart of Georgia, the artistic connection was immediate. Their sensibilities—the way they make people laugh while telling a story with real heart—is something I’ve always aspired to. I couldn’t be happier to have them on our team.”
