More than 8 years after The New Colossus, a new Wolfenstein game is reportedly in the works at MachineGames

Ten years ago, I remarked on the remarkable transformation of BJ Blazkowicz, the iconic hero of the Wolfenstein series, by MachineGames. They took a character once perceived as a mere embodiment of muscle and turned him into a “magnificently human” figure, a man grappling with a dream that he instinctively knows lacks a happy conclusion. The releases of Wolfenstein: The New Order and its sequel, The New Colossus, showcased not only exceptional shooting mechanics but also a profound dedication to storytelling and character development.

Rumors of a Resurgence

Fast forward to the present, and whispers of a revival for the Wolfenstein franchise are gaining traction. Windows Central has reported that Wolfenstein 3 is currently in development, coinciding with the announcement of a Wolfenstein television series set to debut on Amazon in 2025. Kotaku has echoed this sentiment, citing its own sources to confirm that a new installment in the beloved series is indeed underway.

This news, while exciting, is not entirely unexpected. The gaming industry thrives on established brands and sequels, yet the extended hiatus since The New Colossus in 2017 has been notable. Following that release, the spinoff Youngblood arrived in 2019, which, despite its merits, felt incomplete without its central character. Additionally, the VR title Cyberpilot was launched, but it lacked the depth fans had come to expect.

In the intervening years, MachineGames diverted its focus to other projects, including contributions to Quake and Doom, as well as the successful Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in 2024. While this venture proved fruitful, it raised concerns that MachineGames might become pigeonholed as ‘the Indiana Jones studio,’ a fate that would squander their potential for creating more compelling narratives within the Wolfenstein universe. Fortunately, the prospect of returning to their roots is now on the horizon.

While these developments remain unconfirmed, they are not the first hints we’ve encountered regarding a new Wolfenstein title. In September 2025, Jerk Gustafsson, head of MachineGames, expressed that they have always envisioned Wolfenstein as a trilogy. Shortly thereafter, the studio teased a new project, igniting hope among fans for the return of BJ and his companions. As anticipation builds, one can only hope that the marketing efforts will match the intensity of the gameplay this time around.
