Nintendo Cracks Down on Switch 2 Console Bans
Nintendo is taking a firm stance against piracy on its Switch 2 consoles, issuing bans to users who use MIG flash carts to load games. These flash carts, which can be used for both piracy and legitimate game preservation efforts, are now triggering bans on the new console.
Users like SwitchTools have reported their consoles being banned after using MIG flash carts to play their own game backups. Despite owning the games they were playing, Nintendo is not making a distinction when it comes to issuing bans.
Unlike with the Switch 1, where using a MIG flash cart to play your own games typically did not result in a ban, the Switch 2 seems to be detecting any use of these carts and taking action. The bans currently seem to be limited to the specific console used, rather than affecting the entire Nintendo account.
Nintendo’s recent updates to the Nintendo Account User Agreement show a clear escalation in anti-piracy efforts, with the company warning of rendering devices permanently unusable if users attempt to bypass or modify the system’s protections.
While it’s understandable that Nintendo wants to combat piracy, these bans are also impacting legitimate game preservation efforts. It’s a reminder to users to be cautious when using third-party accessories with their consoles.
