Planescape: Torment, while perhaps overshadowed by titans like Fallout and Baldur’s Gate, stands as a hallmark of the golden age of computer role-playing games (CRPGs). Its unique blend of an eccentric setting, quirky characters, and a quest-solving approach that prioritizes dialogue over combat has left an indelible mark on the genre, influencing contemporary titles such as Disco Elysium. However, new explorations within the Planescape universe have been scarce. The closest offering is the spiritual successor, Torment: Tides of Numenera, which diverges significantly in its setting.
In a promising turn of events, a dedicated group of Polish modders is poised to breathe new life into this beloved classic with an expansive project aimed at enriching the original Planescape experience. According to their website, girmuar.pl, the upcoming expansion will introduce two new recruitable characters, a variety of new planar creatures, original musical compositions, and even fresh cinematics that promise to enhance the narrative depth.
Restoration and Innovation
In addition to new content, the modders are committed to restoring elements that were cut from the original game, including voice lines, lost items, and graphical features that were hidden within the game’s files. While they describe these restored elements as “minor details,” they emphasize that the majority of the content in the mod is original, crafted by their team.
The heart of Planescape has always been its rich storytelling, and the modders are keeping the specifics of the expansion’s plot under wraps for now. They have indicated that the narrative will focus on the main characters and will primarily draw from the 2nd edition of Dungeons & Dragons, while also incorporating aspects from subsequent editions. This new chapter is designed to provide a higher-level experience, commencing when The Nameless One returns from the outer plane of Carceri.
Regarding the timeline for release, the modders have shared mixed news. They anticipate that the full project may not be completed until 2031, although they express hope for an earlier finish. On a brighter note, the first act of the expansion is set to debut later this year, with an estimated playtime of around twelve hours.
Upon its release, Blizzard in Baator will be available in both English and Polish. However, since the expansion is based on the Polish version of Planescape, players may notice some variations in naming conventions compared to the original English edition.
