The anticipation surrounding the Overwatch Season 2 update is palpable, as players reflect on the journey through the inaugural chapter of this multiplayer phenomenon. Associate Game Director Alec Dawson has shared insights into the significant changes Blizzard is implementing in the near term, alongside the team’s broader aspirations for the year ahead.
Revitalizing Classic Characters
Among the highlights, the beloved ‘Pharmercy’ duo is making a comeback, thanks to revamped abilities for some of the game’s original heroes. Dawson emphasizes the importance of integrating modern elements while maintaining the essence of these characters. “Some of the parts on our ever-moving machine are sparkling and new, specially crafted to fit well into modern Overwatch,” he notes. This includes enhancements designed to keep older characters competitive without overwhelming their kits.
Mercy is set to receive a notable upgrade with the addition of Flash Heal to her standard abilities. This feature, which delivers a substantial healing boost to low-health allies, introduces an engaging in-combat decision without complicating her existing toolkit. Similarly, Pharah will benefit from the incorporation of her Drift Thrusters minor perk, allowing her to maneuver while executing her Barrage, a much-needed adjustment in the fast-paced environment of modern gameplay.
Reaper, too, is receiving a significant boost with the inclusion of his Dire Triggers major perk as a standard ability. This enhancement allows him to engage more effectively with distant targets, addressing previous limitations. Dawson describes this as “a necessary upgrade that justified the use of another input,” further enriching the gameplay experience.
Enhancing Player Interaction
In addition to character updates, the end-of-match experience is undergoing a transformation. Dawson acknowledges that the previous system lacked the opportunity for players to connect and socialize. To remedy this, Blizzard is reintroducing a revamped post-match accolades system that highlights standout performances and allows players to vote for their MVP. This shift aims to foster a sense of community and recognition among players.
As an experimental feature, Blizzard is also introducing shared lobby voice chat during the Play of the Game, encouraging players to engage in lighthearted banter. Dawson emphasizes the importance of connection, stating, “Fun, lighthearted banter and genuine connection is, to us, the best way to celebrate a match.” However, he reminds players that voice chat will be monitored for safety, ensuring a respectful environment.
Future Directions and Competitive Adjustments
Looking ahead, Dawson expresses interest in exploring competitive events with enhanced social components, aiming to create a more dynamic and engaging atmosphere for players. He envisions these events as trials, allowing for quick adjustments based on player feedback, thereby enhancing the overall experience beyond the introduction of new heroes.
In terms of competitive play, Season 2 will introduce a notable change: losses on new or reworked maps will incur less ranking penalty. This adjustment incentivizes players to embrace a wider variety of maps, while also implementing a system to ensure that a map will be automatically selected if it garners a substantial majority of votes. Additionally, players will have the option to select a ‘random map’ if they prefer not to play on the available choices.
Blizzard is also evaluating the hero bans system, with Dawson indicating potential improvements to enhance player agency in the banning process. While changes are not expected for Season 2, the team is considering options such as allowing players to share multiple preferred heroes and introducing a fifth ‘lobby ban’ that reflects the preferences of both teams.
With the launch of Overwatch Season 2 on April 14, players are eager to see the impact of these changes on the gameplay landscape, along with the introduction of new character Sierra. The excitement for what lies ahead is unmistakable, as Blizzard continues to evolve the Overwatch experience.
