Path of Exile 2 is carving out a reputation for having one of the most engaging action RPG campaigns, even as it remains a work in progress. Players are swiftly guided through each act, immersing themselves in the intricate world of Wraeclast. However, upon completing the campaign, they are greeted with an expansive world map dotted with numerous locations, yet lacking clear direction for the endgame grind.
In response to this challenge, developer Grinding Gear Games (GGG) has dedicated recent months to a comprehensive overhaul, ensuring that the endgame experience in PoE 2 is more accessible and rewarding. This transformation will debut in what GGG is heralding as its “biggest expansion ever,” titled Return of the Ancients, set to launch on May 29.
Innovative Features and Mechanics
The Genesis Tree, a familiar element from the original Path of Exile, has taken root in the sequel, introducing novel crafting options for unique jewelry items. Players will encounter new challenges, such as the Delirium mirror, which unleashes formidable foes while tracking progress toward a climactic boss battle with a newly added progress bar.
Additionally, the teaser trailer reveals massive fortifications that players will explore as part of the main endgame quest. Within these walls lie maps featuring unique modifiers that reward players with Atlas tree points. Understanding the needs of min-maxing enthusiasts, GGG has implemented a feature allowing players to auto-complete certain sections by vanquishing a new pinnacle boss located at the fortress’s core.
As players navigate the endgame, they will discover that most league mechanics come with distinct items, events, or passive tree upgrades, guiding them to specific Atlas maps. For instance, a node may prompt Rogue Exile enemies to retreat from a duel, only to prepare for a rematch in another location. GGG’s fresh approach emphasizes the provision of mini-goals, enhancing the exploratory experience across the Atlas.
According to GGG’s Rogers, this endgame rework marks the concluding phase of PoE 2’s early access journey. The Return of the Ancients expansion will serve as the final major update before the game officially reaches version 1.0 later this year, following ExileCon in November. While an exact release date remains undisclosed, all ascendancies (sub-classes) for each character class, along with the remaining two acts of the campaign, are slated for inclusion in the full release. The five additional classes previously announced will follow in subsequent updates.
Moreover, GGG has integrated a new league mechanic that allows players to craft runes and other items, modifying their gear and unlocking new skills that utilize a resource known as Runic Ward. This significant update represents the most substantial shift in PoE 2 since its early access launch two years ago, instilling renewed confidence in its timely progression toward version 1.0.
As anticipation builds, the Return of the Ancients expansion, patch 0.5.0, is set to arrive on May 29, promising an enriched gaming experience for both new and returning players alike.
