The evolution of gaming has often been marked by the tension between traditional input methods and the desire for accessibility. In the realm of real-time strategy (RTS) games, this dynamic has been particularly pronounced. Historically, RTS titles have thrived on the precision of mouse and keyboard controls, leaving console players yearning for a similar experience. However, Creative Assembly, the studio renowned for its Total War series, is challenging this notion with its upcoming release of Total War: Warhammer 40,000 on consoles.
Redefining Input Methods
Dave Petry, the battle product owner at Creative Assembly, recently shared insights at Gamescom, asserting that the belief that controller support is incompatible with RTS gameplay is a “myth.” He emphasized that controllers are merely an input method, serving as an accessibility tool that allows players to engage with games in a way that suits their preferences. Petry stated, “We’ve always wanted to be able to bring that experience to people who want to use a gamepad.”
Creative Assembly’s experience with console RTS titles is not new; the studio co-developed Halo Wars 2, which Petry highlighted as a successful example of integrating controller support within the genre. The simplicity of Halo Wars 2 allowed for a seamless transition to console gameplay, a factor that was less successful with the more complex Age of Empires 2, which required automated villagers to manage resource gathering due to the intricacies of micromanagement on a gamepad.
In Total War: Warhammer 40,000, the focus shifts from building and technology trees—elements that are typically managed in a turn-based context—to real-time battles. While the nuances of commanding units may present challenges when using a controller, Petry remains optimistic about the potential for a satisfying experience. “I think we are learning that we can do this right,” he remarked, expressing confidence in the technical advancements made thus far.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Creative Assembly’s commitment to refining the RTS experience for console players may pave the way for future innovations in the genre, blending accessibility with the depth that fans have come to expect from Total War titles.
