In a recent discussion, Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation studios, emphasized the company’s careful and strategic approach to porting its games to PC. This method aims to expand its audience while maintaining the value of the PlayStation 5 console. Unlike its competitor Xbox, which offers simultaneous releases for PC and console, Sony has typically delayed the launch of its non-live service titles, such as God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2, by at least a year after their initial console debut.
While there have been indications that Sony might adopt a more aggressive strategy regarding PC ports, Hulst reaffirmed during a recent Sony business segment meeting that the company will continue to prioritize a conservative approach. This decision is rooted in the desire to safeguard the unique value proposition of the PS5.
Balancing Innovation and Tradition
When asked about the industry’s shift towards multiplatform gaming, Hulst acknowledged the importance of exploring new ways for players to engage with their favorite franchises. He stated, “It’s important to realize that we’re really thoughtful about bringing our franchises off console to reach new audiences and that we’re taking a very measured, very deliberate approach in doing that. Particularly on the single-player side, our tentpole titles, they’re such a differentiator.”
He further elaborated on the significance of the PlayStation console, noting that it showcases the performance and quality of the hardware. “We want to ensure that players get the best experience from these titles. We’re very thoughtful about how and if and how we bring these titles to other platforms,” he added.
Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, echoed these sentiments, stating that the company will continue to monitor player patterns and behaviors to ensure they meet the needs of their audience effectively. When questioned about Microsoft’s shift to multiplatform releases, he remarked, “We think that competition in the business is healthy and pushes us to innovate.” He acknowledged the presence of multiple players in the industry, which collectively drives overall growth, while expressing confidence in Sony’s current strategy without an immediate need for a pivot.
