Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will launch ‘very soon,’ Ubisoft exec says, but he also namedropped Splinter Cell for no apparent reason so maybe he’s still just messing with us

Five years have passed since the initial leak of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake from the Russian Uplay store. In that time, the gaming landscape has seen numerous developments, yet the much-anticipated remake remains elusive. The situation mirrors the saga of Skull and Bones, characterized by a series of delays, a change in studio direction, a complete reboot, and further postponements. Recently, a humorous social media incident sparked a renewed assurance from Ubisoft that work on the game continues, albeit “behind the scenes.”

It is worth noting that four years have elapsed since Ubisoft announced a full remake of the original Splinter Cell, which appears to be even further from fruition. The last update from Ubisoft celebrated a decade of teasing Splinter Cell enthusiasts with playful image mix-ups featuring the iconic character Sam Fisher.

Ubisoft’s Annual General Meeting Insights

During Ubisoft’s recent Annual General Meeting, no concrete updates regarding either title were disclosed—AGMs typically focus on broader corporate strategies rather than specific game developments. However, in a glimmer of hope for Prince of Persia fans, Chief Financial Officer Frederick Duguet shared insights about a new spinoff entity and how funds would be allocated. He mentioned that some of the revenue would be reinvested into Ubisoft for selective future development of various brands, including a potential boost for their live games.

“As you know, we’ve got some iconic brand names in our catalog that we can either activate or reactivate with little investment,” Duguet stated. He specifically referenced the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, suggesting it is slated for release soon, with Splinter Cell potentially following later.

The latest target for the Sands of Time Remake’s release is set within Ubisoft’s 2026 fiscal year, concluding on March 31, 2026. While this timeline may not align with the term “very soon,” it does offer a semblance of progress compared to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Splinter Cell. Speculation suggests that Ubisoft may be aiming for a holiday 2025 release, which would place it within the next five months, ideally avoiding a launch just days before Christmas.

While the release window for Prince of Persia feels relatively solid, it still stands in stark contrast to the stagnant development of Splinter Cell. Duguet’s mention of the latter raises questions about Ubisoft’s intentions, leading some to wonder if the company is simply enjoying the playful banter at the expense of its dedicated fanbase. This ongoing narrative has been a source of both frustration and amusement for gamers, echoing sentiments expressed five years ago.
