Publisher pulls funding for Romero Games project

Irish developer Romero Games has encountered a significant setback as funding for its in-development project has been abruptly withdrawn. In a heartfelt message shared on BlueSky, studio head Brenda Romero revealed that their project was among several that lost financial backing seemingly overnight. She emphasized that the studio had diligently fulfilled all requirements throughout the game’s development process.

Impending Changes at Romero Games

As the situation unfolds, it appears that Romero Games is bracing for potential layoffs or other substantial changes within the organization. While the studio has not explicitly announced layoffs, the atmosphere suggests that such measures may be on the horizon.

The studio had been developing an ambitious first-person shooter title utilizing Unreal Engine 5. This project gained momentum in July 2022 when Romero Games announced it had secured backing from a “major publisher.” Although the identity of this publisher remains officially undisclosed, speculation has arisen, with former employees suggesting that Microsoft could be the elusive supporter. This development follows a troubling trend, as Xbox recently shut down The Initiative and enacted significant staff layoffs.

In her post, Romero conveyed the gravity of the situation: “We have some difficult news to share. Last night, we learned that our publisher has cancelled funding for our game along with several other unannounced projects at other studios. This was a strategic decision made at a high level within the publisher, well above our visibility or control. We deeply wish there had been something, anything, we could have done to prevent this outcome.”

She reassured stakeholders that this decision does not reflect the team’s dedication, performance, or the quality of the project itself. “We hit every milestone on time, every time, consistently received high praise, and easily passed all our internal gates. We are incredibly proud of the work being done, and of the talented team behind it. The best we’ve worked with,” she stated.

Romero concluded by highlighting the emotional toll this news has taken on the team, many of whom have collaborated for over a decade, with some relationships spanning more than 20 years. “It’s an extremely difficult day, and we’re heartbroken that it’s come to this. If you know of any opportunities or ways you can help our incredible team, please reach out. Thank you to everyone who’s offered support and kindness and encouragement during this difficult time.”
