Pyre Lookout is a Disco Elysium-esque tale of bureaucratic incompetence, red tape, and frogs

Suspended high in a lookout post reminiscent of a Firewatch scene, players find themselves immersed in the whimsical yet frustrating world of Pyre Lookout, a new flash game crafted by developers Outstar and titos2k. The setting is a makeshift office nestled within a forest, where the gentle sway of trees and the ambient hum of insects create an oddly serene backdrop for the chaos that unfolds within.

As the player assumes the role of Gerard Path, the Senior Signaling Specialist at the Pyre Lookout Unit, they navigate a landscape filled with quirky characters: Scott, the HR-driven manager; Jayda, the apathetic youth; and Phylis, a seasoned survivor of corporate turbulence. The atmosphere is thick with a sense of stagnation, as if the characters are trapped in an endless loop of bureaucracy, echoing the frustrations many face in their own workplaces.

The Dilemma Unfolds

When Gerard detects a smoky scent wafting through the air, panic sets in. He alerts Scott about the potential fire, only to be met with a response steeped in corporate jargon. Scott’s focus on “solution-focused” and “team-first narratives” serves as a reminder of the absurdity of the situation. As the dialogue unfolds, players are drawn into a series of exchanges that highlight the often convoluted nature of office communication.

Despite the urgency of the fire, the process becomes mired in red tape. Gerard’s attempts to radio HQ for assistance reveal that the very tower they occupy is ablaze, yet protocol dictates that he must fill out Form C before any help can be dispatched. The router’s malfunction adds another layer of frustration, as Scott’s people-first approach fails to address the technical issue at hand. Meanwhile, Jayda’s reluctance to engage further complicates matters, as outdated forms hinder progress.

A Satirical Take on Bureaucracy

While the gameplay mirrors the mechanics of ZA/UM’s iconic RPGs, with dice rolls determining the outcomes of interactions, it also serves as a satirical commentary on the absurdities of bureaucracy. Players may find themselves chuckling at the dialogue, resonating with the all-too-familiar experience of navigating corporate red tape. Each character’s conversation becomes a reflection of the weariness that accompanies endless rules and regulations, making the game both entertaining and relatable.

Though Pyre Lookout is not intended to replace Disco Elysium, it captures a similar essence, delivering a blend of humor and intrigue within a compact format. Developed in just three days for Ludum Dare’s game jam, it offers a refreshing take on the genre, providing a lighthearted escape while simultaneously critiquing the complexities of modern work life.

Players are encouraged to explore this unique experience, with a particular nod to the game’s whimsical elements, such as bonding with a frog that adds an unexpected layer of charm. The game showcases the creative prowess of Martyna ‘Outstar’ Zych, who, as the Creative Producer at White Wolf, has been involved in notable titles like Vampire: The Masquerade and Hunter: The Reckoning. Her previous work, including the Bloodlines 1-inspired flash game, Santa Monica By Night, further highlights her talent in crafting engaging narratives.
