Ready or Not Review-Bombed on Steam as PC Players Claim Shooter Was ‘Censored’ to Satisfy Console Makers
Ready or Not, the tactical first-person shooter developed by VOID Interactive, is currently facing a wave of backlash on Steam, as players express their dissatisfaction with recent modifications made to the game in anticipation of its console release. In a candid statement on the platform, VOID explained that adjustments were necessary to meet the stringent requirements set forth by console manufacturers, leading to changes in the game’s levels of gore, nudity, violence, and depictions of child mistreatment.
Changes to Game Content
VOID emphasized that the decision to alter certain aspects of the game was not taken lightly. The development team stated, “Throughout this console port process, we’ve done our utmost to only make changes when they are flagged as absolutely required by our first-party partners.” They assured fans that the modifications were intended to preserve the original tone of the game, aiming to avoid the complications that could arise from maintaining multiple versions with differing assets and mechanics.
The studio clarified that while some changes would be visible in the PC version, they would strive to keep the original intent intact whenever possible. For instance, if a modification involved merely swapping a texture, the original design could remain. However, more significant alterations, such as adding clothing to character models, would be more challenging to implement without affecting the core experience.
Despite the development team’s assertion that these changes are minor and largely related to evidence and nudity, the response from the community has been anything but subdued. Some players have taken to Steam to voice their frustrations, urging others not to support what they perceive as censorship driven by corporate greed. Comments range from calls to boycott the game to accusations of laziness in the development process.
While Ready or Not continues to hold a ‘very positive’ overall user review rating on Steam, the recent influx of negative feedback has shifted the latest reviews to a ‘mixed’ status. As of now, VOID has not publicly addressed the complaints, and inquiries for comment from media outlets like IGN remain unanswered.
It’s worth noting that Ready or Not has faced challenges in the past, including a temporary removal from the platform in 2022 due to a trademark dispute related to a level depicting a mass shooting. This incident followed a controversial announcement about a school shooting level, which led to the developer parting ways with its publisher, Team17.
