Report: An Overwhelming Majority of PC Gamers Prefer Older Video Games

Steam’s Annual Review Insights

Recent findings from a report have drawn intriguing parallels with Steam’s annual review, shedding light on gaming trends in 2024. According to the data, players dedicated a mere 15% of their total gaming time to newly released titles this year. In contrast, a significant 47% of their hours were spent on games that debuted within the last one to seven years, while the remaining 37% was allocated to titles that hit the market eight years ago or earlier.

This trend seems to reflect a broader decline in the quality of AAA games released in 2024. Despite the anticipation surrounding high-profile launches such as Skull and Bones, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Star Wars Outlaws, XDefiant, Starfield: Shattered Space, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Concord, many gamers found themselves less than thrilled. The resulting disinterest in these titles has raised questions about the current state of the gaming industry.
