Spyro speedrunner says a PC port of the original game is in the works, and it’s being made with ‘no AI’

Spyro the Dragon, the beloved mascot from the PlayStation era, has found a vibrant new life on the PC platform. The remastered collection, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, is readily available on Steam, allowing both nostalgic fans and newcomers to experience the charm of the original three games. Meanwhile, developer Toys for Bob is diligently crafting Spyro: A Realm Beyond, marking the franchise’s first new entry in nearly two decades.

Exciting Developments in the Spyro Community

However, for those yearning to revisit the classic PS1 versions on PC, the wait is not over just yet. A dedicated group of fans is working on a PC port of the original Spyro the Dragon, which is expected to launch soon. A recent video shared on X showcased what appears to be the game running natively on Windows 11, sparking excitement among the community. The tester, known as Lumilaura, confirmed the authenticity of the footage, stating, “You’re not dreaming, this is Spyro 1 running natively on Windows 11.”

This ambitious port is the result of an innovative project known as the OpenPETE decomp + recomp hybrid, developed by the talented porters Amec and tyscorp. The decompilation process, essential for making such ports possible, was initiated last year by The Moby Collective. To date, an impressive 88% of the game’s functions have been decompiled into source code, alongside 58% of its bytecode.

In her updates, Lumilaura highlighted several impressive features of the upcoming port, including:

  • 60FPS gameplay
  • True widescreen support
  • Perspective correct textures
  • No polygon wobble (a feature that may evoke mixed feelings among die-hard fans of the original graphics)

In a follow-up post, Lumilaura emphasized that the project is being developed without the use of AI, a clarification that has become increasingly necessary in today’s development landscape. She also noted that while the clip showcased the game at 60FPS, it was actually running at a stunning 320FPS, delivering a visually captivating experience. However, she cautioned that the port is still in its early stages, exhibiting various visual artifacts, including camera flashes and erratic camera movements that could induce motion sickness.

As the project remains under wraps, Lumilaura hinted that the release could come “much sooner than we all think.” With the next installment, Spyro: A Realm Beyond, slated for a 2027 launch, the anticipation for the original’s PC port continues to build, leaving fans eager for updates.
