For those unable to access fiber broadband, Starlink can offer significantly higher download speeds compared to traditional copper broadband. With claims of speeds reaching up to 400 Mbps, it is particularly advantageous for gamers looking to minimize downtime during updates or downloads. However, actual speeds can vary based on location, and prospective users can check estimated download and upload speeds for their area on the Starlink website. Some regions may have waitlists due to network congestion.

Starlink performs admirably for slower-paced or turn-based multiplayer games, such as Civilization VI or Minecraft. However, competitive titles like Call of Duty or Counter Strike 2 may present challenges due to increased latency. This latency arises from the distance data must travel to and from satellites over 300 miles above the Earth. Users can expect latency between 25 to 60 milliseconds, a noticeable increase compared to the sub-10 millisecond latency typical of high-quality fiber connections.

To mitigate latency, connecting gaming devices directly to the Starlink router via ethernet rather than Wi-Fi can help. Moreover, a 5G home broadband plan typically proves more cost-effective than Starlink’s hardware investment of 9 and ongoing subscription fees, which range from per month for capped speeds to 0 per month for uncapped options.
