Nintendo’s 2023 Direct presentation showcased a variety of games, but one title stood out among the rest: Stray Children. This intriguing game, directed by the talented Yoshiro Kimura, known for his work on the cult classic Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, features a distinctive pixel art style that immediately captures attention. After a brief wait, developer Onion Games has announced that the game will be making its English debut later this year, with plans for a release on PC.
Game Overview
For those unfamiliar with Stray Children, the premise is as whimsical as it is unconventional. Players assume the role of a young, dog-like boy who is unexpectedly transported to a fantastical realm via an enigmatic old console. This new world is inhabited solely by children, shielded from the ominous presence of “The Olders”—monstrous adults burdened by their own inadequacies and self-doubt.
Much like its predecessor, Moon, Stray Children deviates from the traditional RPG format. Combat unfolds in compact arenas, where players must navigate through intricate bullet-hell style attacks launched by their foes. The gameplay allows for both literal and figurative confrontations with these troubled adults, echoing the narrative depth found in Undertale. This connection is particularly noteworthy, given the significant influence that Moon had on the latter title.
Although Stray Children was released in Japan last year exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, an English localization was promised upon its announcement. While fans eagerly await further details, the exact release date remains unconfirmed. However, it is anticipated to arrive sometime in 2025, and with the year already well underway, enthusiasts are encouraged to mark their calendars and consider adding Stray Children to their Steam wishlists.
