Analysis Reveals Minecraft’s Reddit Community Among the Least Toxic
In a recent analysis of major gaming subreddits, Minecraft’s Reddit community has emerged as one of the least toxic environments in the gaming sphere. Conducted by Chicks Gold, a video-game asset marketplace, this study placed r/Minecraft second overall, with only 1.37% of comments per post containing selected toxic keywords. With a staggering 8,503,899 subscribers, it stands as the largest community in the sample, challenging the notion that size correlates with increased hostility.
The methodology involved sampling 50 recent posts from each subreddit and meticulously scanning their comment threads for a predetermined list of negative terms. This allowed researchers to calculate the share of comments containing any of these terms, ultimately leading to the derivation of a toxicity percentage for each subreddit.

Leading the rankings was r/Oblivion, the subreddit for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which recorded a slightly lower average toxicity rate of 1.36% from its 1,015,373 subscribers. Following closely behind Minecraft, the top five least toxic communities also included The Legend of Zelda and Genshin Impact (both at 1.51%) and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (1.56%). Other notable mentions in the top ten included Warframe (1.57%), No Man’s Sky (1.60%), Red Dead Redemption (1.63%), Animal Crossing (1.75%), and RuneScape (1.84%).
The analysis revealed that while the word-frequency snapshots varied by franchise, terms such as “hate,” “worse,” and “garbage” were frequently flagged across the board. Interestingly, despite the focus on communities with lower toxicity, the study highlighted that some high-profile franchises, like FIFA, exhibited significantly higher levels of negativity. This finding is particularly striking given FIFA’s “E for Everyone” rating in several markets.
A spokesperson from Chicks Gold commented on the findings, stating, “Reddit is a great place to discuss topics such as gaming and share tips on playing tricky video games. However, it can also harbor toxicity, where users may engage in harmful discussions or employ toxic language.” The spokesperson further emphasized the need for parents to be vigilant when allowing their children to engage with gaming communities, as the environment may not always reflect the game’s content.
