Proximity Chat Enhances Multiplayer Experience in Subnautica 2
Proximity chat is poised to revolutionize the multiplayer gaming experience, offering players a unique way to communicate and engage with one another. This feature allows for spontaneous and immersive interactions, whether it’s friends rallying for revenge in a virtual landscape or the eerie silence that falls over teammates in a suspenseful scenario. The excitement surrounding its introduction in Subnautica 2 is palpable.
Anthony Gallegos, the creative director of the game, elaborated on this innovation in a recent developer diary. He explained that players will have the ability to engage in local voice chats, with the audio quality dynamically changing as they move further apart. “As you get further away, you’ll hear a switch to sort of a radio-sounding voice, and you’ll progressively break up as you get further away, up until a certain point where you can almost not hear me at all,” he noted. This feature not only enhances communication but also adds a layer of tension to the exploration of the game’s vast alien ocean.
Beyond proximity chat, the upcoming update promises a suite of features designed to enrich player interactions. Among these are new player emotes, which will allow users to express a range of emotions. Whether cheering on friends, clapping in approval, or playfully showing annoyance, these emotes are expected to foster memorable moments, particularly when used in unexpected contexts.
Another significant enhancement is improved inventory sharing. Players will no longer need to scour the environment for discarded loot; instead, they can simply approach a teammate and access their backpack directly. However, this convenience comes with a caveat: the player whose inventory is being accessed will receive a notification, making stealthy pickpocketing a challenge unless one has particularly inattentive companions.
Additionally, the update introduces a player revive feature. Should a teammate become lost or incapacitated due to hunger, fellow players will have a limited time to reach them, share oxygen, and restore them to health. This functionality is seen as a crucial addition, one that many players are surprised was not included in earlier versions of the game.
As the development team continues to work on the Early Access 2 update, which promises new regions, storylines, and vehicles, this update serves as an essential stepping stone. It lays the groundwork for a more expansive and challenging gameplay experience, ensuring that players are well-equipped for the adventures that lie ahead.
