Netflix Releases New Game Thronglets Based on Black Mirror Episode
Netflix has recently launched a new game called Thronglets, inspired by an episode from the latest season of Black Mirror. The game combines elements of Tamagotchi and Pokémon, with dark and existential themes that align with the series.
Developed by Night School Studio, the same team behind Oxenfree, which Netflix acquired in 2021, Thronglets offers a unique narrative gameplay experience. Sean Krankel, the founder of Night School Studio, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Netflix, citing the streaming platform’s support for diverse storytellers.
In the episode titled “Plaything,” Thronglets takes center stage in the same universe as Netflix’s interactive movie Bandersnatch. Players are tasked with hatching, evolving, and raising creatures known as Thronglets, attending to their needs as they multiply rapidly.
While the game involves caring for virtual creatures, it also delves into deeper themes related to human nature and the consequences of digital obsessions. Players can unlock video fragments of a documentary titled “Ritman Retrospective” by building groups of Thronglets, known as a Throng.
As part of Netflix’s gaming offerings, Thronglets is available for free on the iOS and Android app for users with an account. This release follows the departure of Netflix’s gaming boss Mike Verdu and the company’s shift towards party and narrative games.
The new season of Black Mirror is now streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a glimpse into the dark and thought-provoking world of technology and society.
