Drawing inspiration from an earlier NFC media player, the new case features a cartridge pocket that has been deepened to accommodate an eject button. This button activates a lever at the rear, effortlessly releasing the cartridge, while still maintaining compatibility with the existing cartridge library.
Attention to detail is evident in the engineering of the device. With a chip operating at a 45W thermal design power (TDP), the intake and exhaust systems have been generously sized, ensuring that airflow remains unobstructed and noise levels are minimized. Prototypes were crafted using recycled PLA, but the final product showcases a robust shell made from carbon-fiber-reinforced PETG. Decorative olive-green panels are bolted onto the case, creating an appealing armor-like aesthetic, complemented by vibrant orange buttons that provide a striking contrast. The finishing touches include intricate panel details marked with a UV laser, and while an initial attempt to fill debossed logos with gold-flecked UV resin was unsuccessful, the logos were ultimately laser-engraved, each featuring unique in-universe Easter eggs.
How it actually works
The ingenuity of this project lies in its software architecture. Departing from the Home Assistant setup used in the previous media player, this new console operates on distinct firmware while utilizing identical hardware. The ESP32 microcontroller transmits the cartridge ID via USB serial to a mini PC, where a small Python application running in the system tray maps each ID to either a Steam ID or a designated executable path. With a simple insertion of the cartridge, the corresponding game is launched seamlessly.
However, there are a couple of caveats to consider. The ESP32 requires an external USB cable connecting it to the mini PC, as the internal headers were deemed too risky to utilize without labels. This aspect is set to be addressed in a forthcoming version of the cartridge player, as shared by the creator.
