Exploring the Unique World of The Midnight Walkers
The Midnight Walkers presents an intriguing blend of influences, drawing from the hardcore survival mechanics of Escape From Tarkov, the character-driven zombie combat of Dead Island 2, and the high-stakes atmosphere reminiscent of a Squid Game-style entertainment show. This eclectic combination, while unconventional on paper, surprisingly coalesces into a captivating experience. My recent half-hour gameplay session at Gamescom revealed early signs of promise in what is shaping up to be a highly atmospheric zombie game.
Set within the confines of the Liberty Grand Centre—a towering structure with over a dozen interconnected floors—The Midnight Walkers opts for a compact, vertical environment rather than a sprawling open world. In this post-apocalyptic setting, a cadre of corrupt elites has orchestrated a survival gauntlet that pits multiple teams against each other in a loot-rich, zombie-infested building. The objective is straightforward: gather as much loot as possible and reach an extraction pod before succumbing to the undead. Failure to escape means losing everything you’ve collected, a concept that should resonate well with fans of both zombie and extraction games.
Though my Gamescom demo was limited to a solo, PvE experience, I found myself immersed in the game’s dark and gripping atmosphere. The journey began in the parking lot and led through various levels, including a hospital, casino, and TV studio. The creators behind the Liberty Grand have crafted challenging environments that successfully avoid monotony, each level brimming with tension and eerie details.
As I navigated the once-familiar corporate office space, now overrun by zombies, the tension was palpable. The elevator doors opened to reveal a chaotic scene where the undead lurked behind overturned desks, crawled through vents, and crashed through ceiling tiles. Playing as the character Lockdown, armed with a composite bow, I found that for every zombie I dispatched with a precise shot, several more seemed to emerge. While the variety of zombies left something to be desired, I remain optimistic that further development will enhance this aspect. The environments, however, were strikingly well-designed, effectively balancing open areas with tighter choke points.
As I scavenged for high-value items, strategically fitting them into my Tarkov-style inventory, a warning flashed on the screen: toxic gas would soon fill the floor. This mechanic encourages players to keep moving and creates moments of conflict, as the game randomly selects which floors become hazardous at intervals. Unlike the predictable ‘closing storm’ mechanics found in many extraction and battle royale games, this unpredictability adds an exciting layer of strategy. Elevators and stairwells serve as safe havens from the gas, but they may not shield players from ambushes by rival teams.
The extraction process involves locating escape pods using a scanner that emits a beeping sound as you approach. Unlocking these pods takes time, and during my session, I encountered a particularly crowded room filled with zombies, which resulted in a swift demise before I could even initiate the unlocking process. This scenario hints at the chaotic situations players can expect when attempting to escape, both from the undead and competing players.
Combat in The Midnight Walkers adopts a hero-style approach, featuring a selection of characters, each with unique abilities. Lockdown, my chosen character, specializes in ranged attacks, though his gameplay felt somewhat clunky. A rework of this class has since been announced, which may address these concerns. I also had a brief opportunity to try Brick, a character wielding a hefty sledgehammer. The visceral satisfaction of swinging this melee weapon highlighted the game’s impressive flesh damage and dismemberment mechanics, though the combat still lacks a degree of sophistication.
Overall, the gameplay loop holds great potential. Initially, I questioned whether the pod scanners and gas-immune stairwells would simplify navigation, but my experience was devoid of other players, which likely altered the dynamics. While combat and enemy variety require refinement, I am eager to revisit The Midnight Walkers in a squad setting, complete with PvP interactions. The Liberty Grand offers a compelling backdrop for post-apocalyptic entertainment, and I look forward to seeing how the action unfolds within this immersive arena.
