Lossless Scaling Frame Generation Tool Arrives on Android
Frame interpolation has long been a popular method to enhance gaming experiences, but now frame generation tools are taking things to the next level. Developer FrankBaretta has recently brought the Lossless Scaling Frame Generation (LSFG) tool to Android, originally released on Steam. This tool utilizes Vulkan to provide frame generation in various games, even those without built-in frame generation or scaling.
The LSFG feature is already integrated into version 0.9.1 of the GameNative app, making it easy for users to access and adjust settings as needed. However, to use this feature on mobile, users will need to have a copy of the PC app. The GameNative changelog explains that enabling the feature in container settings will prompt users to download the lossless scaling app if entitled in Steam, or to purchase it if necessary.
According to the developer, the Android port of LSFG may introduce 50 to 80 milliseconds of lag compared to the Linux version due to Android’s limitations. The frame generation process on Android involves running on a MediaProjection screen-capture stream and then compositing the result in a system overlay over the target.
A video shared by GameNative X demonstrates the significant performance improvements that LSFG can bring to games like The Last of Us Part 1, boosting frame rates from 30fps to over 80fps in some cases. While some users have reported similar performance gains, it’s important to note that the Android version of LSFG may have latency issues, particularly in games that require quick reflexes.
GameNative is not the only PC gaming app to incorporate frame generation features recently. GameHub also introduced an AI frame generation feature in version 6.0.1, although it’s unclear if this feature is based on the LSFG utility.
