In a recent update on LinkedIn, Marc-Alexis Côté, the long-time leader of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, shared insights regarding his departure from Ubisoft, a company that has been his professional home for over two decades. Côté clarified that the decision to leave was not his own, indicating that the company opted for a successor who was “closer” to the organizational structure to take over his role.
Transitioning Leadership
While Côté mentioned that he was offered another position within Ubisoft, he emphasized that this new role did not align with the scope, mandate, or continuity of his previous responsibilities. This shift may be indicative of a broader organizational change, particularly as Assassin’s Creed now falls under the newly established Vantage Studios, backed by Tencent.
Reflecting on his time at Ubisoft, Côté expressed deep gratitude for the experiences and relationships he cultivated throughout his career. He stated, “I want to be clear that I hold no resentment. Ubisoft has been my home for all my professional life, and I will always be grateful for the people, the projects, and the belief that together we could create worlds that inspire millions.”
As he transitions away from his role, Côté likened himself to a captain ensuring the safety of his crew before departing. “In the later years of my career, I came to see myself as the captain of the Assassin’s Creed ship, someone who leaves only once every soul on board is safe. And that is exactly what I have done for as long as I could,” he remarked.
