Are Facebook, Instagram Down? Users report problems with Meta
Since 1 p.m. ET, users across the nation have experienced a notable surge in outages affecting Facebook and Instagram. By 1:20 p.m. ET, Downdetector, a platform dedicated to monitoring service interruptions, recorded over 105,000 reports indicating issues with Facebook, predominantly linked to the mobile app. Additionally, there were 11,000 reports concerning Facebook Messenger and 70,590 for Instagram, with a significant 78 percent of users attributing the problems to the app itself. The city of Chicago appears to be at the epicenter of these disruptions, although reports have emerged from various regions throughout the country.
Meta’s Response to the Outages
In response to the growing concerns, a Meta representative confirmed the situation. “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps,” the company stated via X, formerly known as Twitter, nearly an hour after the outages began. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.” This message reflects Meta’s commitment to addressing the technical difficulties users are facing.
The nature of the issues reported by users varies widely, from complete inaccessibility of the apps and websites to difficulties in posting or viewing comments. Many have encountered error messages, including one from Facebook stating, “we’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.” Meta’s portfolio includes not only Facebook and Instagram but also Threads and WhatsApp, which have also been affected by the outages.
Specifically, WhatsApp users reported 8,234 outages, with 82 percent indicating challenges in sending messages. Threads, while experiencing a rise in outages, reported a lesser impact, with Downdetector noting 892 outages, 70 percent of which were attributed to the app itself.
Meta, originally known as Facebook, underwent a rebranding in 2021 to emphasize its focus on developing the metaverse. The company ranks among the largest American information technology firms, alongside industry giants such as Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon.
This is not the first time Meta has faced such challenges; a similar outage occurred nine months ago, preventing users from logging into Facebook, Instagram, and Threads for several hours. During that incident, Meta Communications Director Andy Stone acknowledged the technical difficulties and expressed the company’s commitment to resolving the issues swiftly.
As the situation unfolds, users remain hopeful for a prompt resolution, reflecting on past experiences where Meta has successfully navigated similar challenges.
