Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla and SpaceX, recently shared exciting developments regarding his social media platform, X. During an appearance on the “Joe Rogan Experience,” Musk revealed plans for a new feature called “X Chat,” set to launch in the coming months. This innovative messaging service will be seamlessly integrated into the existing X platform and will employ a peer-to-peer encryption model reminiscent of Bitcoin.
Redefining Messaging Security
Musk emphasized that X has completely overhauled its messaging infrastructure to create X Chat, asserting that security should be viewed in terms of “degrees of insecurity” rather than a simple binary classification. His vision is to establish a chat environment that minimizes vulnerabilities compared to other messaging applications.
“It’s using a sort of peer-to-peer-based encryption system. So, it’s kind of similar to Bitcoin. I think, very good encryption,” Musk noted, indicating that the feature is currently undergoing extensive testing to ensure its reliability and security.
In a departure from conventional messaging apps, Musk confirmed that X Chat will not include advertising hooks, a decision aimed at reducing potential risks associated with misuse. This focus on user privacy and security is a cornerstone of the new chat experience.
In addition to the integrated chat feature within X, Musk announced plans for a standalone app, expected to be available in a few months. Users will have the ability to send text messages, share files, and conduct audio or video calls once the full suite of features is rolled out. This new messaging system represents a significant upgrade from X’s existing direct messaging capabilities, which are currently in beta for Premium subscribers.
The in-app chat will support a variety of media, including text, photos, GIFs, and file sharing, all linked to X handles instead of traditional phone numbers. This shift not only enhances user experience but also aligns with Musk’s broader vision of integrating advanced technology into everyday communication.
Musk’s fascination with Bitcoin has been evident in recent discussions, including a comment made on October 14 regarding the nature of currency and energy. He stated, “That is why Bitcoin is based on energy: you can issue fake fiat currency, and every government in history has done so, but it is impossible to fake energy.” This perspective underscores his commitment to leveraging innovative technologies to redefine communication and financial systems alike.
