Meta, the parent company of Instagram, initially championed the cause of end-to-end encryption, announcing plans for its implementation across its platforms, including Messenger, back in 2019. However, the company has since altered its trajectory, citing low usage rates as a primary reason for the reversal. This decision was quietly communicated in March, raising eyebrows among privacy advocates who have long been concerned about the implications of tech giants sharing user communications with law enforcement and for artificial intelligence training purposes. Meta has clarified that it does not utilize private messages for AI model training.

For users who valued the privacy afforded by end-to-end encryption, Meta has suggested alternative solutions. Users are encouraged to consider switching to WhatsApp or the standalone Messenger app, both of which continue to support this privacy feature. Additionally, Meta has reached out to users who previously had e2ee enabled, advising them to download their chat histories and media before the feature is fully retired. It’s important for users to ensure they have the latest app update to successfully archive their encrypted chats.
