On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday, users of Meta’s popular social media platforms—Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger—found themselves facing unexpected disruptions. Reports of outages began to surface around 1 p.m. Eastern Time, as individuals from coast to coast experienced difficulties accessing their favorite apps.

In a swift response, Meta took to social media to address the situation, expressing gratitude for users’ patience. “Thanks for bearing with us!” the company stated. “We’re 99% of the way there – just doing some last checks. We apologize to those who’ve been affected by the outage.”

According to data from Downdetector, the majority of users encountered issues primarily with mobile applications, rather than their desktop counterparts. Notably, Facebook Messenger experienced the highest percentage of reported outages, highlighting the app’s significant role in daily communication for many.

Initially, Meta acknowledged the technical difficulties, stating, “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.” Within an hour of the first reports, services began to gradually resume, restoring connectivity for many users.
