Spotify is enhancing its platform’s social capabilities with the introduction of an in-app messaging feature, marking a significant shift in how music enthusiasts engage with one another. Traditionally, users have turned to external applications such as Instagram, WhatsApp, or TikTok to share their favorite tracks and playlists. With this new update, Spotify aims to foster a more integrated experience, allowing users to connect and converse without leaving the app.
One-on-One Messaging
Initially, the messaging function will support one-on-one conversations. Users can initiate chats with individuals they have previously shared content with, whether through collaborative playlists, Jams, Blends, or Family/Duo plans. Additionally, if a user receives a Spotify link via another platform, they can easily approve a request to chat by tapping the link. For those looking to expand their conversations, inviting friends through contact links is also an option.
The messaging feature is conveniently located under the user’s profile picture in the app’s left-hand hover bar. To enhance user interaction, Spotify has included support for emoji reactions to specific messages. While messages are encrypted both at rest and in transit, it is important to note that they are not end-to-end encrypted. Spotify has implemented measures to proactively scan for content that violates its guidelines, and users retain the ability to report conversations for further review.
This development aligns with the vision articulated by Spotify’s chief product and technology officer, Gustav Söderström, who hinted last month at a more interactive mobile experience on the horizon. The rollout of this feature is currently limited to users over the age of 16 in select Latin and South American markets, with plans for a broader release in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the EU, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand in the coming weeks.
