The Google Play Store has unveiled a new Personal Safety app designed to equip users with essential tools for navigating emergency situations. This innovative application aims to connect individuals with vital information and emergency services when needed, enhancing personal safety during unforeseen events.
The Personal Safety app offers a range of features, including the ability to schedule safety check-ins while traveling in potentially hazardous areas. Users can input critical medical information, such as allergies and blood type, ensuring that first responders have immediate access to pertinent details. Additionally, the app can be configured to automatically share your location and status with designated emergency contacts in case of danger. For select Android devices, particularly Google Pixel models, the app includes advanced functionalities like automatic car crash detection. Users should note that enabling most features requires location sharing, and for car crash detection, an active SIM or eSIM is necessary.
Emergency SOS
In the heat of an emergency, the last thing one needs is to fumble with complicated phone commands. Android’s Emergency SOS feature addresses this concern by allowing users to create shortcuts for swift access to crucial emergency actions. Accessible through the Safety & emergency section of the Settings app, this feature can be customized to suit individual needs.
With Emergency SOS, users can set up a simple shortcut, such as rapidly pressing the power button, to activate various functions instantly. These include calling emergency services, sending a location ping to emergency contacts, and recording video footage. The video recording feature is particularly noteworthy, as it automatically shares recorded content with emergency contacts and backs it up to cloud storage, provided there is an internet connection. However, users are reminded to utilize this feature responsibly, as recording individuals without consent may infringe on privacy laws.
Crisis Alerts
Staying informed is crucial for personal safety, especially in unpredictable situations. Android’s Crisis Alert feature serves as an early warning system, providing users with timely alerts about dangerous events in their vicinity, from natural disasters to severe weather conditions. Most Android devices come with this feature enabled by default, but users can easily reactivate it through the Safety & emergency section of their settings.
When activated, Crisis Alerts will notify users of imminent dangers based on a combination of public sources, including government alerts and local news feeds, as well as Google’s own data collection efforts. Tapping on a Crisis Alert notification directs users to a Google Search results page, offering further details and safety recommendations. This feature is available globally, ensuring that users are informed regardless of their location.
Earthquake Alerts
Given the severity of earthquakes, Google has developed a dedicated Earthquake Alert service for Android devices, distinct from the broader Crisis Alerts. This service ensures that users receive the most relevant information regarding seismic activity. Similar to Crisis Alerts, Earthquake Alerts can be activated in the Safety & emergency section of Android settings.
Google utilizes data from ShakeAlert and the approximate locations of Android devices to issue alerts about upcoming and ongoing earthquakes. Notifications may be sent before, during, and after seismic activity, providing details such as the estimated epicenter, magnitude, and shaking intensity. Users will also receive guidance on how to take cover during an earthquake, including visual instructions. While Earthquake Alerts are accessible in various countries, in the U.S., they are primarily available in California, Oregon, and Washington, with other states relying more on accelerometer data from Android users, which may affect the accuracy of magnitude estimates.
Emergency Location Service
In any emergency, the ability for first responders to locate individuals swiftly can be a matter of life and death. To facilitate this, Android offers the Emergency Location Service (ELS), which can be activated through the Location services menu in the Location section of settings.
When ELS is enabled, your precise location will be transmitted to emergency services whenever you call or text them. This feature is particularly beneficial if you are unable to communicate your whereabouts clearly due to a medical emergency. The ELS is triggered only when contacting emergency numbers, such as 911 in the U.S. or 112 in Europe, ensuring that location data is shared exclusively with emergency responders and not with Google. Additionally, the ELS may provide relevant information, such as your preferred language, to assist first responders in effectively communicating with you.
