Amazon is closing its Android app store

In a significant shift within its digital ecosystem, Amazon has announced the impending closure of its Android app store, set for August 20, 2025. This decision, communicated through a developer email and a support page, marks a pivotal moment for developers and users alike.

Key Changes for Developers and Users

Effective immediately, developers are no longer able to submit new Android applications to the Amazon app store. However, they retain the ability to submit updates for existing live apps until the closure date. This transition period allows developers to make necessary adjustments and enhancements to their current offerings.

In a related development, in-app purchases (IAPs) have been disabled for customers in Japan. Users in other regions will continue to experience the app store’s functionalities as usual, at least until the official closure.

Amazon has addressed potential concerns in its FAQ section, noting that it cannot guarantee the functionality of any apps downloaded from its Android app store post-August 20. Nevertheless, subscriptions purchased through the app store can still be managed either within the app or via the website, providing some continuity for users.

Another notable change is the discontinuation of Amazon Coins, a virtual currency used for transactions within select apps and games. From today, these Coins will no longer be available for purchase, and any unused Coins will be refunded after the store’s closure.

Despite these changes, the Amazon app store will continue to operate on the company’s proprietary devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablet, ensuring that users of these products can still access apps and content without interruption.
