Android Auto’s Spotify update adds new playlist options for long trips

Spotify and Android Auto have forged a seamless partnership, and the latest update to the Spotify app enhances this collaboration significantly. Users will notice a refreshing UX-enhancing facelift, alongside the introduction of exciting new features, particularly in the realm of collaborative playlists.

Introducing Spotify Jam

While jams typically evoke thoughts of traffic snarls, the Spotify Jam feature turns that notion on its head. This innovative addition allows everyone in the vehicle to contribute their musical preferences to a shared queue, creating a playlist that caters to diverse tastes.

Although Spotify Jam has been a staple of the mobile app for some time, its recent integration into Android Auto marks a significant milestone. This collaborative approach to in-car music listening empowers passengers to participate actively, ensuring that the driver is not solely responsible for curating the soundtrack of the journey.

To join the fun, passengers can simply scan a QR code and use their own devices to add tracks to the collaborative queue. While the device connected to Android Auto must have a Spotify Premium account, anyone can join the Jam, including those with free accounts, making it an inclusive experience for all travelers.

Visual Enhancements and Search Improvements

In addition to the collaborative features, the update brings subtle yet impactful visual changes. While it is not a complete redesign, the UI refresh significantly enhances the overall user experience. One of the standout changes is the introduction of a floating Search button located in the lower right-hand corner of the interface. This feature provides direct access to a dedicated voice-powered Search page, streamlining the search process and reducing reliance on the sometimes unreliable Google Assistant.

The new search functionality offers users greater control. Previously, the search feature would automatically play a track it assumed was the desired choice. Now, users can view a list of results and select exactly what they want to hear. While searches remain voice-controlled—an essential safety feature while driving—the integration within the app enhances usability.

Enhanced Offline Listening Experience

For those who prefer offline listening, the Downloaded section of your Spotify library has been elevated to a more prominent position. This adjustment not only simplifies access to downloaded content but also introduces new indicators that highlight which tracks from an album or playlist are available for offline enjoyment. This is particularly beneficial for users mindful of data usage, especially when traveling abroad or in areas with limited connectivity.

To take advantage of these new features, users need only update the Spotify app on their smartphones. As previously announced at I/O 2025, similar enhancements will be rolled out to vehicles equipped with built-in Android Auto in the future, although a specific timeline for this rollout has yet to be disclosed.
