Google is introducing an exciting update to Android XR, enhancing the user experience for Galaxy XR users with a range of quality-of-life improvements and new applications.
Enhanced App Interaction
The latest Android XR update allows users to pin apps directly to virtual walls, ensuring they remain securely anchored in their chosen positions. This feature enables practical applications, such as keeping a calendar app conveniently next to your office desk or anchoring a favorite streaming app in a space that feels like a personal cinema.
During your session, keep a calendar app pinned next to your office desk, or anchor your favorite streaming app to the space you always wished you had a big screen TV.
Moreover, the headset will now automatically restore the previous session, including all apps and their layouts, ensuring a seamless transition between uses.
Natural Interaction with Virtual Content
When users enter their home space, they will see their hands through the passthrough cameras while interacting with virtual content. This feature is designed to enhance the sense of presence, making every reach, pinch, and swipe feel more intuitive and natural. Users can enable this feature by navigating to the Settings app, then selecting Advanced and Labs.
Another innovative addition is the auto-spatialization feature, which transforms nearly any app, game, website, image, or video into a 3D experience. This capability adds depth to YouTube videos, 2D games, and even web pages in Chrome, significantly enhancing the immersive potential of the headset.
Headsets have beautiful immersive displays, but making the most of them has been held back with so many apps still living in a 2D world.
A Growing Ecosystem of Apps
In terms of applications, Google reports that there are now over 100 apps designed to fully leverage the immersive capabilities of XR, a number that has doubled since the launch of the Galaxy XR. New additions include:
- Real VR Fishing and Trombone Champ: Unflattened!, both of which promise to elevate the fun factor.
- The Paris St. Germain (PSG) Immersion app, which allows users to experience live games as if they were at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris, offering both immersive viewing and an overhead perspective of the action on a tabletop.
Samsung is rolling out this Android XR update to the Galaxy XR today, introducing not only these new features but also enhancements in hand tracking, eye tracking, and accessibility improvements.
