Firefox looking into Android bug sending users back a page

In recent days, a peculiar issue has surfaced for many Firefox users on Android. Reports indicate that the browser unexpectedly navigates back to the previous page while users are in the midst of reading, often returning them to Google search results without any forewarning. This glitch typically occurs just moments after a page has fully loaded. Users click on a link from a Google search, begin to engage with the content, and suddenly find themselves staring at their search results once again. One particularly exasperated user expressed on Reddit that the browser has become “essentially useless now.”

As the conversation unfolded on Reddit, dozens of users echoed similar frustrations, detailing the same erratic behavior. Some noted that this issue arises approximately 50% of the time, while others reported experiencing it nearly 70% of the time. The bug does not merely revert users back one page; in some instances, Firefox jumps back two or even three pages, leaving users further behind in their browsing history.

Attempts at standard troubleshooting have proven futile. Users have tried various methods, including disabling extensions, clearing the cache, force-stopping the app, and even uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, yet none of these solutions have resolved the issue. It appears that the problem is specifically linked to clicking links from Google search results, as navigating within a website itself seems to function without a hitch.

Mozilla’s Response

A member of Mozilla’s mobile engineering team took notice of the rising complaints and requested users to provide video evidence of the issue. They also directed users to an official bug report filed on Bugzilla (bug 2011319), where the company is actively tracking the problem.

The bug report indicates that Mozilla’s Quality Assurance team initially tested Firefox across 11 different Android devices without being able to replicate the issue. However, as users began sharing their device specifications, a discernible pattern emerged. Many of those affected are utilizing Samsung Galaxy phones operating on Android 16 with One UI 8.0. One user even uploaded a video showcasing Firefox reverting back several pages after loading content, effectively wiping out the page history and rendering the forward button useless.

The timing of these reports coincides with recent updates to Firefox. Version 147.0 was released on January 13, followed by 147.0.1 on January 16, with user complaints beginning to surface around the same time. Interestingly, a user of Waterfox—a browser based on Firefox—reported a similar issue a few weeks prior, where clicking links would reset the browser and return users to the previous page. Given that Waterfox shares code with Firefox, this could provide insight into the underlying issue.

For the time being, users have found a workaround: opening links in new tabs rather than navigating directly. While this may be an inconvenient solution, it allows users to continue browsing without the constant interruption of being redirected back to their search results.

Mozilla engineers are encouraging affected users to test the Firefox Nightly and Beta versions to determine if the bug persists in those environments. They are also gathering logs from devices experiencing the issue to better understand the cause of this unexpected back navigation.
