Last month, Google teased the integration of its Photos app with the Gemini application, and now this feature is officially being rolled out to Android users. This new functionality aims to enhance user experience by allowing seamless access to backed-up images and videos.
Features of the Google Photos Integration
The integration consists of two main components designed to streamline how users interact with their photo libraries. The first component enables users to locate their backed-up images and videos through various criteria:
- Facial recognition or relationships saved in Google Photos
- Location or date of the photo
- Keywords describing the content of the photo
- Current conversations within the Gemini mobile app
Users can issue prompts such as:
- “Find my photos of Alex”
- “Show my photos from last summer”
- “Show me recent selfies”
- “Show my photos from my most recent trip”
- “Find my photos of landscapes”
The second component allows users to request important details related to their photos, reminiscent of the standalone Ask Photos feature in Google Photos. Examples of queries include:
- “@Google Photos, what themes have we had for Lena’s birthday parties?”
- “What did we eat at the hotel in Stanly?”
- “What were some of the things we ate in Mexico City?”
- “What are the top 10 things we saw on our last trip?”
- “What’s my driver’s license number?”
When users tap on an image or album result, they are directed to the Google Photos app, with the option to view additional results by selecting “Show more.”
To activate this feature, users can navigate to the Gemini app, access the profile menu in the top-right corner, select Apps, and scroll to Media to find Google Photos. This integration appears alongside other popular apps like Spotify and YouTube, and a recent update has introduced a more detailed Google Workspace card, enhancing user understanding of functionalities available through Gmail, Google Calendar, and more.
Currently, the Google Photos integration is being rolled out gradually to a select group of invited users, with availability limited to Android devices in the United States at this time.
