Urgent Spring Cleaning for Android Users
For Android users feeling overwhelmed by a plethora of applications, now is the perfect moment for a digital declutter. Cybersecurity experts have recently unveiled a concerning threat lurking within a multitude of apps: the “Vapor” malware. This insidious bug, once installed, wreaks havoc on devices by inundating users with intrusive adware while simultaneously attempting to pilfer sensitive credit card information.
The IAS Threat Lab first identified the “Vapor” attacks last year, and their findings suggest that hundreds of applications have been compromised, impacting over 60 million users. “The IAS Threat Lab has uncovered an extensive and sophisticated ad fraud scheme, codenamed Vapor, that leverages fake Android apps to deploy endless, intrusive full-screen interstitial video ads,” the team explained. They further emphasized that “Vapor exploits unsuspecting users and ad networks on a massive scale, representing a highly organized and pervasive ad fraud scheme.”
Bitdefender, another prominent cybersecurity firm, has corroborated these findings, identifying 331 concerning applications, which include QR scanners, fitness services, diaries, and battery optimizers. “The apps display out-of-context ads and even try to persuade victims to give away credentials and credit card information in phishing attacks,” Bitdefender cautioned.
In response to this alarming situation, Google has taken action by blocking all identified malicious software from its platform. While this is a positive development, users who have previously downloaded any of the affected apps must remain vigilant, as the ban does not automatically remove these applications from their devices.

- ClickSave Downloader – Downloaded 1 million times
- Scan Hawk – Downloaded 1 million times
- Water Time Tracker – Downloaded 1 million times
- Be More – Downloaded 1 million times
- BeatWatch – Downloaded 500,000 times
- TranslateScan – Downloaded 100,000 times
- Handset Locator – Downloaded 50,000 times

If there are any doubts, it is advisable to refrain from hitting the download button. Despite Google’s ongoing efforts to block dubious applications from its Play Store, some continue to evade detection.
