Google is set to broaden the reach of its Play Signal API, an initiative designed to enhance age assurance for younger users, with a global rollout expected by the end of 2026. This technology, which has been operational in Brazil, empowers Android developers to identify younger users within their applications, thereby creating safer and more age-appropriate experiences.
Global Expansion Timeline
The initial phase of this expansion will see the API introduced in Australia and Canada by mid-August, followed by a comprehensive rollout to all markets by the close of the year.
This move comes at a time when lawmakers and regulators worldwide are intensifying their calls for app stores to implement stronger protections for minors. In response to these pressures, Apple launched its own age-verification tools globally in February, aligning with the increasing number of age-verification laws being enacted.
Similar to Apple’s approach, Google’s technology allows developers to ascertain a user’s age range without needing access to sensitive personal information, such as their date of birth. Instead, it facilitates a process where parents can directly share their child’s age range with apps. Adults can also provide their age when prompted, enabling a tailored experience within applications.
To streamline the management of this information, parents will not be required to share age details on an individual app basis. Google has centralized these controls within its Family Link parental controls dashboard. Once parents input their child’s age range, any developer that opts to utilize this age-range information can access it to customize their applications accordingly.
Importantly, Google emphasizes that age ranges will not be shared automatically; parents must actively opt in by entering this information.
This feature complements other safety tools available on Google Play, which include options for developers to limit a child’s ability to discover certain apps. Additionally, parents can continue to leverage the Family Link app to manage screen-time limits, approve app downloads, and set PIN-based content filters for specific applications.
