Google finally opens up the Play Store’s gates in the US

In a significant shift for the Android ecosystem, Google is set to transform the Play Store experience for users in the United States. This change, prompted by a court ruling in its ongoing legal dispute with Epic Games, will allow Android users to download applications and make payments outside of the Play Store beginning October 29, 2025.

Expanded Opportunities for Developers

With this new directive, developers will have the freedom to inform users about alternative app availability and pricing options beyond the confines of the Google Play Store. They will be able to link directly to external app stores or payment methods, potentially offering users more competitive pricing on apps and subscriptions.

  • Developers can now promote cheaper deals available outside Google Play.
  • Links to alternative versions of their apps can be provided.
  • Payment options beyond Google Play Billing, such as credit card payments and PayPal, will be permitted.

This marks a notable departure from Google’s previous policies, which restricted app makers from advertising or linking to external payment solutions within their applications. The court’s injunction compels Google to relinquish this control, at least until the order is set to expire on November 1, 2027.

Google has emphasized its commitment to user trust and safety, stating that these principles will continue to guide its operations even as it adapts to the injunction’s requirements. The company has indicated that these changes are currently applicable solely to applications serving users within the United States.

Looking ahead, Google plans to share additional program requirements and business model adjustments aimed at maintaining user trust and safety in the ecosystem. This feedback-driven approach reflects the company’s intention to balance developer flexibility with user security as it navigates this new landscape.
