Google is once again refining the user experience of its widely-utilized Google Maps app, particularly for Android users. With an impressive 154 million daily active users, the app has become an integral part of daily navigation, with U.S. users reportedly spending an average of 23 minutes each day engaging with its features. Beyond mere directions, Google Maps offers a plethora of functionalities, including restaurant recommendations, accommodation suggestions, and insights into historical landmarks. Here are the latest changes being made to the Android version of Google Maps
The latest updates focus on two key buttons within the app. The first is the Floating Action Button (FAB), located at the bottom right corner of the main display. This button has been redesigned to be smaller and now features a teal color with a diamond-shaped icon that includes a teal arrow pointing to the right. Tapping this button after entering a destination directs users to a journey planning screen, where they can conveniently add stops along their route by selecting the three-dot icon next to the “Your location” box. This menu also allows users to customize their journey by changing their vehicle avatar, selecting fuel-efficient routes, and avoiding tolls, highways, and ferries, while providing estimates for toll-road prices.
The second button receiving a makeover is the current location indicator, positioned just above the FAB. Previously represented by a blue arrow within a circle, this button has transitioned to a squircle shape, now featuring an icon resembling a compass. When the map fails to display the user’s current position, this icon transforms into the familiar blue dot, ensuring clarity in navigation.

Further up the interface, the layers button on the right side has also been updated, now incorporating a small dot within the icon. This button enables users to select their preferred map view, whether it be the default layout, a satellite view, or a terrain-focused perspective. The rollout of these enhancements is currently underway for Android users with version 25.39 of Google Maps. Users with the latest version, such as those on the Pixel 6 Pro running version 25.40, can already experience the refreshed design.
