Google must open up lucrative app store to rivals after historic ‘Fortnite’ verdict, judge rules

In a significant development for the tech industry, a federal judge has mandated that Google must open its Android app store to increased competition from smaller players, including Epic Games, the creator of the popular game “Fortnite.” This ruling, delivered by US District Judge James Donato in San Francisco, has the potential to reshape the landscape of the app market, which has long been dominated by Google.

Judicial Mandate for Change

The ruling follows a landmark verdict in December, when Epic Games successfully argued that Google was operating illegal monopolies through its Play Store and its associated Android in-app billing system. Judge Donato emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “You’re going to end up paying something to make the world right after having been found to be a monopolist.”

Under the judge’s order, Google will face several restrictions over the next three years. Notably, the company will no longer be able to prevent app developers from utilizing their own in-app payment systems. Furthermore, developers will be allowed to direct users to download apps from alternative sources beyond Google’s lucrative Play Store.

In addition to these changes, Google will be prohibited from entering into agreements that pay specific app developers for exclusive distribution through its Play Store. The company will also be restricted from sharing revenue generated by its Play Store with other app store operators, further leveling the playing field for competition.

Meanwhile, Google is also contending with a separate antitrust case brought by the Justice Department, which targets its alleged monopoly over digital advertising technology. As these legal battles unfold, there is a growing expectation that regulators may pursue a more drastic approach, potentially leading to a breakup of Google’s expansive empire.
