Google has officially rolled out Android 17, the latest iteration of its mobile operating system, initially available for Pixel phone users. In tandem with this release, the company has introduced a new Pixel Drop and the latest version of its smartwatch operating system, Wear OS 7. Each of these updates brings a host of exciting features designed to enhance user experience across devices.
Android 17
Android 17 is now live for Pixel phones, with plans for broader availability on other Android devices throughout the year. Among its standout features are:
- Bubbles: This innovative feature allows users to open any mobile app as a pop-up “bubble,” streamlining multitasking by keeping recent bubbles organized in a new bar interface at the bottom of the screen.
- Screen Reactions: Emulating popular desktop capabilities, Android 17 enables users to record their screen while simultaneously capturing video from their selfie camera, perfect for tutorials and walkthroughs.
- Foldable Gaming Mode: For those with foldable devices, this mode transforms one half of the screen into a digital gamepad, enhancing the gaming experience.
In addition to these features, Android 17 enhances security and parental controls, offering improved location-sharing options, Live Threat Detection, and a “Mark as lost” feature within the Find Hub. Parents can set screen time limits and content filters without needing to link a Google Account.
June Pixel Drop
The June Pixel Drop introduces a wealth of AI-driven features for Pixel phone users:
- Gemini Omni: This feature allows users to edit videos simply by conversing with an AI chatbot, remix images and videos, or create custom AI avatars that can be integrated into scenes.
- Lyria 3 in Gemini: Google’s latest music generation model, Lyria 3, is now available, enabling users to choose styles, tempos, or even upload images to inspire new songs.
Minor upgrades are also included for select Pixel models. The Pixel Drop introduces Google’s speech-to-voice translation with the AudioLM feature for Pixel 10am devices, while Android Quick Share, akin to AirDrop for iPhones, is now available on Pixel 9a and Pixel 8a devices. Additionally, the “Take a Message” feature, which allows users to record personalized outgoing messages and receive voicemail transcriptions, has been rolled out to all compatible Pixel devices in the U.S.
Wear OS 7
For smartwatch enthusiasts, Wear OS 7 brings several notable enhancements:
- Android Live Updates: Users can now receive live updates directly on their smartwatch, tracking sports scores, food delivery times, workouts, and more.
- Control Other Devices: Wear OS 7 allows users to manage other Android devices from their wrist, including accessing audio playing on headphones or home speakers and viewing photos taken with smartglasses.
- Emergency Sharing: In the event of a fall, car accident, or loss of pulse detected by the Pixel Watch, the device will automatically contact emergency services and notify designated emergency contacts.
