Google has been steadily enhancing the user experience of its Phone app, introducing a series of updates under the Material 3 Expressive design framework. While many of these changes have already been implemented, additional updates are on the horizon, promising to further refine the app’s functionality and aesthetics.
Upcoming Changes to the Phone App
- The Keypad will soon have its own dedicated tab, replacing the existing Contacts tab.
- The Recents tab will be rebranded as Home, streamlining navigation.
- A new sidebar will take the place of the current three-dot menu, enhancing accessibility to various features.
The recent APK teardown of Phone by Google v182.0 beta has unveiled potential features that are in development, hinting at a more intuitive interface. Although these features are not guaranteed to appear in the final public release, they offer a glimpse into what users can expect.
Currently, the Phone app’s user interface includes tabs for Recents and Contacts, along with a floating action button for the Keypad. The forthcoming updates will eliminate the floating action button, integrating the Keypad directly into the tab structure. A new View contacts chip is expected to appear at the top of the interface, providing easy access to contact information.
As users navigate to the Keypad tab, they will notice the Home tab consistently visible at the bottom of the screen. This adjustment aims to enhance convenience, as the current design necessitates returning to the previous screen using the back button. Additionally, the Call button’s position will be slightly adjusted to accommodate the new layout, which may take some getting used to for long-time users.
In the existing UI, the Recents tab features a three-dot menu button located in the search bar. This element is set to be replaced by a sidebar, which will maintain the same options while offering a more streamlined approach to navigation.
As these updates are still in the pipeline, users eagerly await their rollout. The enhancements promise to create a more cohesive and visually appealing experience within the Google Phone app.
