In a significant shift for Galaxy users, Samsung is poised to transition from its OneDrive integration to a new partnership with Google Photos. This change comes on the heels of Samsung’s announcement earlier this year, which indicated that the OneDrive backup feature within the Samsung Gallery app would soon be phased out.
Recently, a new service named “Gallery Cloud Sync” has emerged on the Galaxy Store, hinting at its role as a successor to the existing OneDrive functionality. This service promises to securely back up users’ cherished photos and videos to what is referred to as “Google Cloud,” which, in this context, is likely synonymous with Google Photos.
Tech enthusiast Sandeep Adap has uncovered this new feature, while another user, Josh Guy, has had the opportunity to preview its capabilities. Although the service is not yet live, it is expected to allow seamless synchronization between Samsung Gallery and Google Photos. Users will be able to view their available Google storage, select specific albums for syncing, and manage their preferences for syncing over Wi-Fi or while roaming.
This transition could be particularly impactful for those who have relied on OneDrive for backing up their Gallery content. While the change may require users to adapt to a new platform, the overall experience is anticipated to remain consistent, as the sync controls will still be integrated directly within the Gallery app.
As the OneDrive sync option begins to vanish for some users, Samsung’s forthcoming Google Photos integration is expected to provide a more intuitive alternative. Although an official announcement regarding the launch of Gallery Cloud Sync and its Google Photos integration has yet to be made, the timeline suggests that these features could roll out as early as later this month or in early October.
