Google has unveiled an exciting new tool for Android enthusiasts, allowing users to create personalized Android bot avatars. For over 15 years, the small green robot, affectionately known as Bugdroid, has served as the official mascot of the Android operating system. The latest iteration of this mascot, a 3D version, debuted in 2023, and now, Google is taking customization to the next level.
Previously, Google offered a “Create Your Own Android Bot” feature that allowed users to dress up their bots with various clothing and accessories. However, the new Androidify app significantly expands on this concept, enabling users to craft their bot avatars based on personal photos or descriptive text prompts. This innovative approach provides a remarkable depth of customization, making it a delightful experience for fans.
The Androidify app employs a sophisticated blend of technologies, including Gemini 2.5 Flash for photo captioning, Imagen for generating custom Android bots, and Veo 3 for animating the bots with distinct personalities. This combination ensures that each bot is not only unique but also captures the essence of the user’s input.
I made my own Androidify bot
In a recent exploration of the app, I experimented with various photos and discovered the sheer joy of seeing the generated outputs. My most successful attempt came from a Halloween selfie where I donned a Ghostbusters jumpsuit and proton pack. The resulting Android bot, naturally green, sported a tan jumpsuit, a proton pack, and even featured a rendition of the iconic “no-ghost” logo on its sleeve. While the details weren’t flawless, the overall vibe was undeniably fun. Subsequent attempts with different photos yielded equally enjoyable results.
While using text prompts to generate bots proved to be a bit more challenging, the app still managed to capture the intended essence quite well, despite the lack of intricate detail compared to photo-based creations.
How to make your own Androidify bot
Creating your own Androidify bot is a straightforward process. Users can download the Androidify app or opt for the browser version. The first step involves choosing whether to use a photo as the foundation for your bot or to provide a text prompt describing your desired creation.
If you decide to go the photo route, you can either take a new picture or select one from your gallery. Opting for a gallery photo can be particularly enjoyable, as it allows for the inclusion of accessories or unique outfits that the app will replicate. It’s advisable to choose a photo featuring only one person, as the app may struggle with images containing multiple individuals, sometimes resulting in amusing mashups.
Once you’ve selected your photo and tapped “Transform,” the app will begin crafting your bot. Upon completion, users can choose from various formats for their creations, including a large phone wallpaper, a banner, a sticker, or a 3:1 size suitable for social media cover photos. Additionally, you can select a background from a selection of 15 options, further enhancing the personalization of your Android bot.
